SUMMARY:COP 27 GWEC Wind and Solar Pavilion: Launch of the Asia Clean Energy Coalition: Accelerating corporate renewable electricity procurement in Asia
DESCRIPTION:Climate Group\, GWEC and WRI launch the Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC)\, aiming to rapidly improve the policy and regulatory environments for corporate renewable electricity procurement in Asia to support decarbonisation goals. There is vast potential to harness private sector investment to deploy large-scale renewables for power sector decarbonization in Asia – a crucial battleground for the energy transition. The Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC) convenes a diverse coalition of leading renewables private sector actors\, including Google\, Meta\, Samsung\, Orsted\, Iberdrola and others\, to enact critical policy shifts in Asia that will enable a variety of corporate procurement options for renewable energy. \nCurrently\, RE100 APAC members can only cover 16% of electricity consumption with renewables\, although the commercial and industrial sector represents 60-70% of electricity consumption in the region. This event underscores that businesses play a critical role in driving both supply and demand for renewable energy\, and can resolve transition bottlenecks if working in collaboration. The event highlights the status of renewable electricity across Asia markets\, and the policy frameworks for corporate procurement which can enable rapid scaling up of supply and demand for renewables. These options include net metering to solutions that unlock investment for new grid-scale wind and solar projects. We will address different case studies (developed and developing economies)\, and how this work can contribute to a just and equitable energy transition in the region. \n  \nAgenda: \n  \nKeynote Remarks \n\nHelen Clarkson\, CEO\, Climate Group\nBen Backwell\, CEO\, GWEC\n\nPresentation: Insights on Asia from the IEA’s forthcoming “Strategies for Corporate Procurement of Clean Electricity” (2022) report \n\nAli Al-Saffar\, Programme Manager for Middle East and North Africa\, International Energy Agency\n\nPanel Discussion and Q&A \n\nModerated by Jennifer Layke\, Global Director of Energy\, WRI\nEdward Palmieri\, Senior Director of Sustainability\, Meta\nMarsden Hanna\, Head of Sustainability and Climate Policy\, Google\nAdam Bruce\, Global Head of Corporate Affairs\, Mainstream Renewable Power\nNg Lay San\, Co-founder & Head\, GoNetZero\, Sembcorp Industries\n\nHost: Sepi Golzari-Munro\, Director\, Energy Transition\, GWEC
