PGE Baltica, a PGE Group company, has selected a geotechnical and structural designer for the ground reconnaissance phase of the EWB1 investment, part of the Baltica 1 project. It will take place on the offshore wind farm’s area and on its export cable route. The contract was concluded with Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions from Ireland.
The scope of activities covered by the contract includes supervision of the project’s subsoil reconnaissance work using geophysical and geotechnical methods, development of a subsoil model and conceptual design of foundations for further design stages.
Offshore geotechnical and geophysical surveys are aimed at recognizing the subsoil of the future investment, i.e. the Baltica 1 offshore wind farm and the export cable connection in the offshore part. Detailed knowledge of the investment substrate is an essential element of the investment process related to the construction of offshore wind farms.
The Baltica 1 Offshore Wind Farm project, with a capacity of about 0.9 GW, is one of PGE Group’S three projects currently under construction in the Baltic Sea, located about 80 km from the shoreline, roughly at the level of the town of Łeba in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Among other things, the project already has a location permit and connection agreement in place, and the first full year of wind, sea current and ripple studies behind it. This year, PGE Baltica begun ground investigation for the onshore part of the project, and signed a contract for preliminary geotechnical studies of the seabed and for geological studies of the land-sea drilling. The Baltica 1 OWF will be operational after 2030.
The next two projects are Baltica 2 and Baltica 3. PGE Group is implementing them jointly with Ørsted. Together, they will form the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm, with a total capacity of 2.5 GW. The Baltica 2 stage, with a capacity of about 1.5 GW, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027, while the Baltica 3 stage, with a capacity of about 1 GW, by 2030.
