ORLEN Group, in response to the global energy transition challenges, has announced an ambitious renewable energy target of 12.8 GW of installed capacity by 2035. A key element of this strategy is the development of offshore wind power, with ORLEN Group stepping up its offshore operations. Thanks to the ORLEN Neptun project, Poland will become one of the leaders in green energy in the Baltic Sea region.
ORLEN Neptun offshore wind farms
On the horizon of 2035, four offshore wind farms will become the cornerstone of ORLEN’s renewable energy strategy. The projects include:
- Baltic Power (ORLEN S.A. & Northland Power Inc.), which is already under construction. This is the first of a major investment to provide a stable source of wind power in the Baltic.
- Baltic East on Slupsk Bank, the most advanced project on offer from ORLEN Neptun. This project, which is being prepared for auction in 2025, is an important part of ORLEN Group’s ambitious goals in the Baltic.
- Two projects on the Oder Bank in Western Pomerania, which are also being developed under ORLEN Neptun. Although these projects will be commissioned after 2035, they are already an important part of ORLEN’s energy strategy.
Capacity and impact on the energy market
The estimated combined potential of the four wind farms is an impressive over 6 GW of generating capacity. This energy will be able to power more than 8 million households in Poland, contributing to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and supporting the country’s move towards carbon neutrality.
ORLEN’s new strategy for 2025-2035, entitled “Energia jutra zaczyna się dziś” [‘Tomorrow’s energy starts today’], represents the largest and most ambitious investment programme in the company’s history. The main objectives of this strategy are to increase gas production, build four offshore wind farms, develop large-scale energy storage facilities and implement nuclear power projects. The ORLEN Group will invest as much as PLN 380 billion in the implementation of these plans, making this programme the largest in the history of the Polish energy sector.
– We will contribute to building the energy independence of the Polish and regional economy. We will be safe, competitive and modern. We will invest up to PLN 380 billion. This is the largest development programme in the history of Polish energy. We are implementing a strategy that is ambitious and responsible. It is our commitment to our customers, and therefore to all Poles. There is a lot of catching up to do in our industry. This is the decade of last chances for the energy area, which is why we are accelerating – said Ireneusz Fąfara, President of the Management Board of ORLEN, during the presentation of the strategy.
Energy security and modernisation of infrastructure are key priorities of the strategy. Among the measures envisaged by ORLEN for the coming years are large-scale energy storage facilities, which will enable efficient storage of energy from renewable sources and powering of the system in case of need. In the area of nuclear energy, ORLEN Group plans to build at least two small nuclear power plants, which will become an important element of Poland’s future energy mix.
In parallel with the intensification of investment activities, ORLEN is focusing on the integration of its companies and the implementation of modern management principles. CEO Ireneusz Fąfara emphasised: ‘In parallel, we are intensifying the integration of group companies. We are introducing and consolidating corporate governance rules and modern, transparent management principles. We are optimising projects and processes to successively increase the value of ORLEN Group for our shareholders.’
The implementation of ORLEN’s 2035 RES strategy will require large investments and intensified activities in the offshore wind sector. By implementing projects such as Baltic Power or Baltic East, ORLEN will build a solid foundation for further development and transformation of the Polish energy sector.
Green energy from the Baltic will not only ensure Poland’s energy independence, but will also allow it to meet the growing demand for clean energy in the region. ORLEN Group’s strategy is a step towards a green future – both for Poland and for Europe as a whole.
