According to Lithuanian media, Latvia has expressed no objection to the construction of a large offshore wind farm near the common border. This was announced by the Ministers of Environment of Lithuania and Latvia.
Lithuanian Minister of Environment Simonas Gentvilas said after a meeting of the Baltic Council of Environment Ministers in Klaipeda that the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of a future wind farm in Lithuania will be completed later in 2022. Latvia has also become familiar with the plans. They are particularly interested because the wind turbines will be located just 3 km from its border. Gentvilas said that Latvia has no objection to the project, LETA- BNS reports.
“There is no problem with that, we need to work together and not block each other. We discussed how the process can be expedited because once the evaluation is complete, building permits will be available and bids can be issued”, Gentvilas said.
The first auction for offshore wind in Lithuania is planned for 2023.
In turn, Latvian Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Arturs Toms Pless stressed that the offshore wind farm project is very important for all Baltic countries due to their independence from importing energy resources from Russia. He emphasized the importance of onshore and offshore wind turbine development.
