Lithuanian Minister of Energy, Dainius Kreivys, has signed an agreement providing for enhanced cooperation between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania. The cooperation includes achieving Lithuania’s energy security and climate-neutral energy transition goals.
According to the ministry, this is the first such Memorandum of Understanding signed between US and Lithuanian energy policy institutions. The agreement provides for cooperation on strengthening Lithuania’s energy sector in the area of cyber security, as well as transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources used in the electricity system by 2050.
“We have ambitious goals for the next three decades to become not only a fully energy-independent country, self-sufficient in generating our energy needs from renewable sources, but also a country that exports its energy surpluses to other countries in the region”, Kreivys said.
Modeling Lithuania’s sector of the future
The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which boasts the highest scientific achievements in the world, will be involved. One of the largest and most significant energy projects that will be carried out by scientists from the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in cooperation with the Lithuanian Energy Agency, will be the modeling of Lithuania’s energy sector based on scientific research and reliable data. The project will be based on an energy sector transformation model developed by an American laboratory that is currently being implemented in Los Angeles. Lithuania will be the first country in the world to implement this model in order to achieve the goal of 100 percent RES by 2050.
