Berlin, 18 February 2025 – During the official launch event, electricity transmission system operators 50Hertz and TenneT presented the Green Grid Compass together with the FfE (Forschungsstelle für Energiewirtschaft e. V.). The digital tool can be found on www.greengrid-compass.eu and provides data on CO₂ intensity and on the share of renewable energy in the individual European electricity bidding zones. It is based on the already existing tools eCO₂grid (50Hertz) and the CO₂ Monitor (TenneT), which were harmonised through joint development. The methodology, tested by TÜV SÜD, creates transparency and offers users past, real-time and day-ahead information on greenhouse gases.
- Digital tool supplies data on CO2 intensity and renewable energy in the European electricity bidding zones to the nearest hour
- The Green Grid Compass implements EU regulations and supports users with their smart energy management
The Green Grid Compass addresses key energy transition challenges and supports the implementation of EU regulations such as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), which requires the hourly specification of the share of renewable energy and the CO2 intensity in the market area in question. Furthermore, the tool provides an answer to the increasing sustainability requirements and helps companies to efficiently organise their contribution to net zero.
Applications of the Green Grid Compass
- Smart energy management: companies and consumers alike can synchronise their electricity consumptions, such as the smart charging of electric vehicles or the planning of high energy-consuming processes, with times when the share of renewables is high, allowing them to cut back their CO2 emissions.
- Sustainability reports: the Green Grid Compass offers the necessary data basis for transparent and comprehensive reporting in accordance with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Bayernwerk, Mercedes-Benz, clever-PV, Covestro, Edenberg, EWE Hydrogen, STROMDAO, LichtBlick, UnternehmerTUM, VK Energie, OLI and E.ON are part of the implementation network and will test different use cases in the coming months. Other partners are free to join the network. The Green Grid Compass can be integrated into companies’ and consumers’ own projects/systems via an application programming interface or API. The API is available for free on our website: go to www.greengrid-compass.eu.
