The Bundesverband Windenergie Offshore e.V. (BWO), the leading association representing offshore wind energy interests in Germany, has nearly doubled its membership following a strategic restructuring. Over the past year, BWO has broadened its reach across the offshore wind value chain, resulting in a significant expansion of its member base.

The association’s managing director, Stefan Thimm, announced the addition of 21 new members, bringing the total number to 45. Among the latest to join is certification and advisory company DNV. “I would like to express my gratitude to our new members for their confidence in our work. I am excited about the expertise they bring to the table,” said Thimm, reflecting on the positive impact of the recent membership growth.

Originally established as the Bundesverband der Windparkbetreiber Offshore (Association of Offshore Wind Farm Operators), BWO has undergone a major transformation. This expansion allows the association to better represent the full spectrum of offshore wind expertise, positioning it as a key player in addressing both political and industry-related challenges. “With this success, the association’s relevance as a competent partner for all aspects of this fascinating technology is further enhanced,” Thimm added.

Jörg Kubitza, the chairman of BWO’s board, emphasised the growing importance of offshore wind energy for Germany’s energy transition. “The association’s new direction aligns with the increasing role offshore wind plays in a climate-friendly energy supply.” The German government has set ambitious targets, aiming for at least 70 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045, a significant increase from the current 9 GW installed in German waters.

Kubitza also noted that BWO is adapting to the sector’s rapid pace of development by tackling new areas such as efficient planning, international cooperation, and protecting offshore wind infrastructure from physical and cyber threats.
