Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has announced the procurement of design services for the land-based segment of the „Harmony Link“ electricity interconnection with Poland. The project will involve key technical decisions and the design of critical infrastructure in Lithuania, including a 220 kV transmission line and the Gižai transformer substation.
“By initiating the procurement for design services, we are entering a critical phase of implementing the land-based segment of ‘Harmony Link.’ We have prepared thoroughly, conducting market consultations to ensure smooth and timely procurement and design processes. To accelerate the project, design and territorial planning will proceed in parallel. ‘Harmony Link’ is a strategic project for Lithuania, providing capacity for commercial electricity trade after the Baltic States synchronize with continental Europe’s grids,” said Rokas Masiulis, CEO of Litgrid.
Market consultations with potential participants were conducted in September and October 2024 to refine the procurement documentation. The design phase, expected to last 29 months, will include preparing specifications for long-lead equipment like autotransformers and shunt reactors.
In parallel, territorial planning and environmental impact assessments are underway. The project’s Polish partner, PSE, is conducting feasibility studies and aims to make a financial investment decision by the end of 2024.
„Harmony Link“ holds the status of a project of national significance and complements the existing „LitPol Link“ interconnection. Both projects are essential for the Baltic States’ synchronization with the continental European grid and are partially funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility.
