Ørsted is extending its goal of using 100% renewable electricity to its product or service suppliers as well. The company expects it to be met by 2025 at the latest.
The commitment is a continuation of the supply chain decarbonization program first established in 2020. Ørsted recently became another member of the “1.5 °C Supply Chain Leaders” initiative, a platform for green transformation leaders who share their experience with decarbonizing supply chains to reduce climate change.
Mads Nipper, president and CEO of Ørsted Group, said: “A sustainable future for our planet requires a rapid transition to renewable energy and limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. That’s why the renewables industry must lead the pack by decarbonising its own supply chain. We’ve transformed Ørsted into a global leader in renewable energy and strongly believe that companies must demand science-aligned climate action from each other as well.”
Since 2006, the company has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity (i.e., direct emissions from energy sources and other owned or controlled sources, and indirect emissions from electricity and heat generation and purchased and consumed fuels) by 87%, and is on track to become carbon neutral in its energy generation and its operations by 2025.
In a comment to BalticWind.EU on the application of the target for projects that Ørsted is implementing and planning in cooperation with other companies, among others in Estonia with Enefit or in Poland with PGE or ZEPAK, we were informed that in those areas where the market for renewable electricity certificates is not yet well developed, the company will address this issue as part of its relationship management process with suppliers representing 75% of expenditures and focus on other renewable electricity options, including its own on-site generation, and encourage these suppliers to publicly advocate for the development of the necessary solutions. In addition, Ørsted has developed guidelines for suppliers and will maintain an ongoing dialogue with strategic suppliers to support their commitment and transition to 100% renewable electricity. These guidelines will be available on Ørsted’s supplier website.
