In a significant move for Poland’s renewable energy sector, the Pomeranian Voivode has granted permission for the construction of the Bałtyk 2 offshore wind farm. This decision, based on current building regulations and the Act on Promoting Electricity Generation in Offshore Wind Farms, marks a crucial step towards enhancing Poland’s green energy capabilities. The Bałtyk 2 project includes the installation of 50 wind turbines along with an internal electrical and telecommunications network within the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea.

The comprehensive documentation for the Bałtyk 2 investment has undergone meticulous review and approval by relevant authorities, including the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia. This approval process confirmed the rescue plans and navigation and technical expertise necessary for the project. The decision from the Pomeranian Voivode covers both the land development plan and the architectural and construction design, paving the way for construction to commence.

The Bałtyk 2 offshore wind farm will feature 50 state-of-the-art wind turbines. These turbines will be strategically placed within the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea to maximize energy production while minimizing environmental impact. The project also includes a sophisticated network of internal electrical and telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring seamless energy transmission and communication across the wind farm.

Earlier this month, Equinor and Polenergia signed contracts for the transportation and installation of foundations and offshore substations for both Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 projects. Offshore work, scheduled for 2026-2027, will be executed by Heerema Marine Contractors using advanced vessels equipped with heavy lift cranes.

The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 wind farms, with a combined capacity of 1440 MW, will generate clean energy for over 2 million households. Heerema Marine Contractors, renowned for their expertise in offshore wind installations, will handle the transport and installation of 100 monopiles, transition elements, and two offshore transformer stations.

According to Jerzy Zań, President of the Management Board of Polenergia S.A., “The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms will supply clean energy to more than 2 million households. The agreements we have just signed bring us significantly closer to this goal. We are convinced that the wind farms we are developing in the Baltic Sea will change the face of the Polish energy sector and the Polish economy.”

Looking ahead, Equinor and Polenergia are also advancing the Bałtyk 1 project, located 81 km offshore. With a planned capacity of up to 1560 MW, Bałtyk 1 is poised to become the largest wind farm in the Baltic Sea, with an auction set for 2025. Collectively, the Bałtyk 1, 2, and 3 wind farms will supply green energy to over 4 million households, significantly contributing to Poland’s energy transition and independence.
