With all 111 monopile foundations installed at Baltica 2, the 1.5 GW joint venture between PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Ørsted has moved into a phase that is less visible than pile driving but no less consequential for the Polish supply chain.

More than 400 secondary steel units will be fitted to the completed foundations — anode cages that protect against corrosion, boat landings for service vessels, and internal and external platforms. Around 75 per cent of them are being manufactured in Polish plants. The work is expected to continue until the end of 2026.

The foundations themselves comprise 107 monopiles for turbines and four for offshore substations, each up to 100 metres long, between 7.5 and 10.5 metres in diameter and weighing roughly 1,900 tonnes. Van Oord carried out the campaign with two vessels, Svanen and Aeolus, running in parallel to keep capacity high and the installation sequence flexible.

“Baltica 2 is currently the largest investment project being delivered by the PGE Group and one of the most important energy transition projects in Poland,” said Patrycja Kunc-Rozbój, Executive Vice President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica. She noted that onshore work is advancing in parallel — the infrastructure needed to carry power into the National Power System, and the operations and maintenance base that will support the farm for decades.

Offshore substations and export cables are due later this year. Inter-array cables and the turbines themselves follow in 2027. First power is expected in the first half of 2027, with full commercial operation planned by the end of that year.

Baltica 2 sits roughly 40 kilometres off the coast near Ustka and holds all required permits together with a 25-year contract for difference. Once running it is expected to supply the equivalent of around 2.5 million Polish households.
