The European Commission has awarded €52 million in funding to nine renewable energy projects in Finland and Estonia under the EU Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM), with a strong emphasis on expanding wind energy capacity in Estonia. The funding nearly matches the total call budget of €52.4 million and is aimed at supporting the EU’s renewable energy targets while promoting cross-border cooperation among Member States.
Two notable onshore wind projects in Estonia will receive significant funding:
- The Maima Wind Park will receive €8.2 million to develop a wind farm located in the villages of Tarva and Tõrdu in the Põhja-Pärnumaa municipality.
- The Püssi Project, a hybrid renewable energy park combining wind and solar power, will be supported with €9.8 million.
Together, the funded projects across Finland and Estonia will contribute an additional 445.65 MW of renewable energy capacity, with commissioning expected between 2027 and 2028.
These initiatives are made possible through the RENEWFM model, which facilitates cooperation between contributing and hosting countries. In this instance, Luxembourg provided the financial contribution, while Estonia and Finland host the projects, offering optimal conditions for renewable infrastructure development. This mechanism enables Member States to work together more efficiently toward shared climate goals, optimizing the use of both financial and natural resources.
Wind energy’s central role in the Estonian projects highlights the country’s growing importance in the region’s green energy transition, supported by collaborative EU mechanisms.
