The installation of all wind turbines at the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm has been successfully completed. This marks a major milestone for the joint venture between Iberdrola, a global leader in renewable energy, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy pioneer.
Once fully operational, Baltic Eagle will provide renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by around 800,000 tons annually. The wind farm’s 50 turbines, each with a capacity of 9.53 MW, were supplied by Vestas and installed by Fred Olsen Windcarrier.
Baltic Eagle is part of Iberdrola’s broader Baltic Hub, which includes the operational Wikinger wind farm (350 MW) and the planned Windanker project (315 MW). These projects reinforce Iberdrola’s position as a key player in Germany’s offshore wind market.
“This milestone comes in what is a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind activity,” said Ignacio Galán, Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman. “Baltic Eagle, our second offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, will contribute significantly to Germany’s energy transition, supplying clean energy to nearly half a million homes and reducing emissions. This achievement is the result of our strong partnership with Masdar and the dedication of our teams on site.”
HE Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President, added: “The installation of Baltic Eagle’s final turbine is a significant milestone, positioning the project to power 475,000 German households with renewable energy. This achievement also strengthens our collaboration with Iberdrola, furthering global progress on renewable energy targets. Together, we are committed to expanding offshore wind and advancing the energy transition, reinforced by our €15 billion agreement signed at COP28.”
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi remarked: “Baltic Eagle is the first project of our partnership with Iberdrola, and it signifies the beginning of a long-term collaboration. Offshore wind is a crucial technology for the energy transition, and we look forward to working on more large-scale projects that support net-zero goals in Europe and globally.”
By 2026, Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub will have a total offshore wind capacity exceeding 1.1 GW, with an estimated investment of around €3.7 billion. This project strengthens Iberdrola’s growth strategy in Germany, helping the country meet its climate objectives with innovative energy solutions.
At COP28, Masdar and Iberdrola further solidified their partnership by signing a €15 billion agreement to jointly explore offshore wind and green hydrogen projects in key global markets, including Germany, the UK, and the US. Masdar aims to achieve a renewable energy portfolio of 100 GW by 2030, contributing to the UAE’s ambition to triple global renewable capacity by the end of the decade.
