Lithuania is preparing to restart the tender for a second 700 MW offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The Ministry of Energy has announced a new date for the auction, to be held on 18 November 2024, after the process was halted in April this year due to a lack of suitable bids.
In early 2023, Lithuania’s national regulator (Valstybinė energetikos reguliavimo taryba, VERT) announced a tender for the country’s second offshore wind farm, seeking a developer for the 700 MW project. However, in April, due to only one bid being submitted, it was decided to discontinue the process.
The Ministry of Energy announced the publication of the list of qualified bidders on 15 April 2025, with the selection of the winner of the tender planned for June 2025.
Lithuania is aiming to build two offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 1.4 GW, which are expected to meet around half of the country’s current electricity needs. Last year, the government held its first offshore wind energy auction, which resulted in the consortium of Ocean Winds and Ignitis Renewables being provisionally selected as the developer of the first offshore wind farm in July 2023. Three months later, the decision was officially confirmed.
