Offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore has applied to develop and operate a floating offshore wind project outside Stockholm. In the first phase, it will be 1.5 GW.
The Swedish government has received the first application for a floating offshore wind farm outside Stockholm, after Deep Wind Offshore has submitted its plan to develop the Erik Segersäll wind farm in the Baltic Sea. In the first phase, electricity production will be around 6.5 TWh, corresponding to the city of Stockholm’s total annual electricity consumption.
With this, the offshore wind company strengthens its position in the Swedish market. Erik Segersäll is the company’s second application for the establishment of offshore wind in Sweden in a short time. The first application, for the bottom-fixed offshore wind farm Olof Skötkonung in the Bothnian Sea, has been forwarded from the government to the county board in Uppsala.
– After three years in the Swedish market, we are very pleased to have submitted applications for one fixed and one floating project. We have already reached an important milestone in the first project, which confirms our strong pipeline, says CEO Knut Vassbotn of Deep Wind Offshore.
Area suitable for wind power
The floating wind farm Erik Segersäll is planned around 74 km east of Nynäshamn and can reach electricity consumers on the mainland and on Gotland. The area is defined as an energy area, suitable for wind power, in the Swedish Maritime and Water Authority’s plans.
The wind farm has an area that enables a potential total installed output of 4.5 GW through several phases of development, which will give a total annual production of up to 19.5 TWh and correspond to the consumption of the Stockholm region’s 2.5million inhabitants. In the first phase, an electricity production of 6.5 TWh is planned, the same as the consumption of Stockholm’s city residents.
The Olof Skötkonung bottom-fixed wind farm is estimated to produce up to 7.5 TWh of electricity per year, which corresponds to a large part of Gävleborg’s and Uppsala county’s electricity consumption.
