The first monopiles for the Baltic Power offshore wind farm have been shipped from Steelwind’s plant in Nordenham, Germany, and are now en route to the installation terminal. These massive steel foundations will form the backbone of Poland’s first offshore wind farm, with a total of 78 monopiles set to be installed: 76 for the wind turbines and two for offshore substations (OSS). The production of monopiles commenced in 2024, and offshore installation is scheduled to begin in early 2025.
The Baltic Power wind farm, a flagship project for Poland’s transition to clean energy, is progressing towards its goal of commissioning by 2026. The wind farm will generate nearly 1.2 GW of zero-emission electricity, meeting 3% of Poland’s energy needs and reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 2.8 million tonnes annually.
Baltic Power is set to be one of the first offshore projects globally to feature 15 MW wind turbines. It will also be the first wind farm in the world to use a significant portion of low-carbon steel in its turbine towers. This sustainability milestone is part of the broader drive to reduce the carbon footprint across the entire project’s supply chain.
In 2025, Baltic Power will install 76 Vestas wind turbines, each standing over 230 metres tall and capable of generating 15 MW of power. These turbines will be situated 23 km off Poland’s Baltic coast, and preparations for their foundations have already begun. The project is expected to generate 4,000 GWh of electricity annually, marking a substantial leap towards Poland’s renewable energy targets.
The total budget for the Baltic Power project is estimated at €4.73 billion. In what is Poland’s largest-ever single investment financing, the project has secured €4.4 billion in loan agreements from 25 Polish and international financial institutions
