The synchronization of the Baltic states with continental Europe won the global “Project of the Year” award. The Project Management Institute (PMI), one of the world’s largest and best-known project management organizations, recognized the complex and accelerated implementation of the synchronization project at an awards ceremony in Phoenix, Arizona.
Hannes Kont, Head of Elering’s Synchronization and Crisis Preparedness Unit: “The title of World Infrastructure Project of the Year is a strong international recognition of the synchronisation project, which stood out for its scale and the daily cooperation between four countries – from infrastructure construction to the transformation of IT, monitoring and market systems. Due to Russia’s aggression, the already tight schedule had to be accelerated by another year, but we were able to successfully meet this challenge together.”
According to the PMI, the synchronization of the Baltic countries is an extraordinary achievement that brought together thousands of specialists from four countries. Together, they ensured the region’s energy independence and strengthened energy security.
The synchronization project was carried out by the electricity system operators of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland in close cooperation. The project was significantly supported by the European Union and ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, which provided technical guidance and operational and legal expertise. The project was co-financed by the European Union.
On February 8 this year, the Baltic states left the IPS/UPS electricity system controlled by Russia, and on February 9, our electricity networks were successfully connected to the synchronous area of continental Europe. Synchronization allows the Baltic countries to manage their electricity systems in close cooperation with other continental European countries, ensuring stable and reliable frequency control, strengthening energy independence, and increasing energy security throughout the region. The Baltic countries are now part of the continental European electricity grid, which serves more than 400 million consumers in 26 countries.
Founded in 1969, PMI is a US-based non-profit organization with 700,000 members and 250 chapters worldwide. The institute develops internationally recognized project management standards and certifications for project management professionals.
