German operator ENOVA has completed the repowering of its Gehrde wind farm in the district of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, and brought the site into regular operation after around 18 months of construction.
Three Enercon E-138 EP3 E2 turbines, each with a 138-metre rotor diameter and a total height of 230 metres, replace four Enercon E-66 machines dating from 2002. The rebuilt site has a combined capacity of 12.6 MW and a projected annual yield of 33,000 MWh, enough to supply around 12,000 two-person households.
“With the repowering in Gehrde we show the potential that lies in existing wind farm sites. Modern turbine technology can significantly increase power generation without taking up additional land,” said Hendrik Böschen, chief operations officer at ENOVA. The company acquired the site in April 2024, having secured the federal emissions permit in February that year, and began dismantling the old turbines in mid-February 2025.
ENOVA operates more than 1 GW of onshore capacity and counts among Germany’s larger onshore wind operators, with a target of 3 GW in its portfolio by the end of 2030. For the Baltic-rim market, repowering is becoming a central lever: replacing early-2000s turbines on consented sites adds capacity without the permitting delays that slow greenfield projects.
