Enlight Renewable Energy and ENERTRAG SE have started construction of the Bertikow battery energy storage project in Brandenburg, Germany. The groundbreaking took place on 13 October at the site, with representatives of both companies and grid operator 50Hertz, as well as local politicians and residents, attending.

Bertikow has a capacity of 200 MW and a storage capacity of about 840 MWh. It sits next to the Bertikow substation in the municipality of Uckerfelde, where land rights and the grid connection are secured. Commissioning is planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, with commercial operation expected in the first half of 2028.

Once running, the project is expected to trade on the German day-ahead and intraday markets and in balancing-power markets. For part of the capacity, the partners have signed a seven-year offtake agreement with EDF Trading. It is Enlight’s first battery storage offtake deal in Europe and marks its entry into the German storage market. The asset will be optimised by Entrix, and Osborne Clarke advised Enlight and ENERTRAG on the offtake transaction.

ENERTRAG CEO Gunar Hering said Bertikow shows the energy transition working in practice by storing surplus renewable power and feeding it back when it is needed. Marko Liposcak, managing director of Enlight Europe, said large-scale storage is gaining importance for grid flexibility as renewables expand across Europe.

Brandenburg is one of Germany’s main wind power regions, and storage of this size is intended to ease the integration of that generation into the grid.
