Energiequelle GmbH has commenced construction on a new wind farm in Eulitz, Saxony. This development marks a significant step in expanding wind energy capacity in eastern Germany, a region that has seen slower growth compared to northern states.

The Eulitz wind farm will consist of two Enercon E-160 turbines, each boasting a hub height of 166 meters and a capacity of 5.56 megawatts (MW). With an estimated annual yield of 36,000 MWh, the project is set to provide clean electricity to approximately 12,000 households upon completion.

Despite facing potential regulatory hurdles, including the overturning of the regional plan by the OVG Bautzen in May 2023, Energiequelle’s project remains unaffected due to its prior approval under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). This underscores the importance of securing timely permissions in Germany’s complex wind energy regulatory landscape.

The Eulitz project represents Energiequelle’s second wind farm in Saxony, following their successful repowering of the Mittelherwigsdorf wind farm. This expansion aligns with Germany’s renewed focus on accelerating onshore wind development, particularly in southern and eastern regions where installation rates have lagged.

For the wind energy supply chain, particularly in the Baltic region, Energiequelle’s continued investment in new projects signals ongoing demand for components and services. The selection of Enercon turbines also highlights the competitiveness of German manufacturers in the domestic market.

As Energiequelle plans further projects in Saxony, this development may indicate a potential shift in wind energy growth patterns within Germany, offering new opportunities for industry players focused on the country’s eastern markets.
