The Port of Klaipėda has begun site preparation work in its southern area, moving the largest expansion project in the Lithuanian port’s history into the construction phase.
Once the site is ready, construction of the southern breakwaters is due to start this autumn. The breakwaters will be built by Tilsta, which won a tender launched earlier this year. The contract signed with the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is worth EUR 24.5 million excluding VAT.
“We are now very close to the start of the southern port expansion. After a long period of planning and preparation, work on site is beginning,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda Port Authority. “It will make the country more attractive to investors, strengthen our competitiveness in international markets and support military mobility needs that are important not only for Lithuania, but for the wider region.”
Nearly EUR 600 million — the largest single share of the port’s investment programme for 2026–2029 — is allocated to the southern expansion. Together with investment expected from future investors, the port authority puts the total value of the development above EUR 1 billion, describing it as one of the largest investment projects currently being developed in Lithuania.
The expansion will create new port area and increase capacity for port operations and cargo handling. The port authority said the new breakwaters will also serve an environmental purpose by limiting the flow of salt water into the Curonian Lagoon.
Site works are the first stage of a programme that runs to the end of the decade, with breakwater construction the first major element to go ahead.
