Germany’s latest onshore wind auction has awarded 2.7 GW of new capacity, marking a significant step toward the country’s 2030 renewable energy targets. The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) set the average strike price at EUR 73.30/MWh, in line with previous tenders.

Record participation, positive trend reversal

Of the 239 projects submitted, 230 secured subsidies, marking the first oversubscribed auction since February 2022. The total bid volume exceeded 2.9 GW, surpassing the 2.5 GW annual expansion target. Klaus Müller, president of the Bundesnetzagentur, hailed the result: “This tender is a record. The bid volume in this round is higher than ever before.”

Bid prices in the auction ranged between 5.73 and 7.35 euro cents per kilowatt-hour (ct/kWh), with the average awarded price reaching 7.33 ct/kWh, just below the maximum permitted price of 7.35 ct/kWh, it added.

Progress toward 2030 energy goals

Germany aims to nearly double its onshore wind capacity to 115 GW by 2030, up from 62.1 GW currently. Achieving this is key to meeting the goal of 80% renewable electricity by 2030.

While the oversubscription shows growing confidence, challenges like improving permitting and grid capacity remain. Nevertheless, this auction signals that Germany is on track to accelerate its renewable energy transition, with onshore wind playing a crucial role.
