Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) has added cable carousel rental to its service range, offering operators access to carousel capacity for the length of a project instead of buying and maintaining their own equipment.
The company will start with two carousel systems available for hire, with capacities of 4,000 and 6,000 tonnes. A first rental contract covering both systems has been secured with a European client. SCA describes the move as a multi-million dollar investment, though it has not published a figure.
Carousels store, load and handle cables, flexibles and umbilicals for onshore and offshore work, and they are one of the physical constraints on cable installation campaigns. SCA said the fabrication technique used on the two new systems allows them to be re-purposed to different sizes rather than being fixed at a single capacity.
“Carousels are central to safe and controlled cable handling but purchasing and maintaining a fleet can be a significant financial outlay, particularly for projects with fluctuating or seasonal demand,” said Sil de Rijke, chief operating officer at SCA. “Our rental solution addresses this head on, giving an option that helps to keep costs proportionate to actual usage, while maintaining the reliability and safety standards the market expects.”
The rental equipment is offered alongside loading equipment, cable handling services, mobilisation support and operational execution, drawing on engineering and manufacturing facilities the company runs in Europe and in Dubai.
Founded in 2020, SCA supplies cable carousels, loading towers, tensioners and deck spread solutions for cable-laying vessels and barges. It says it has delivered more than 50 carousel systems worldwide, including units of up to 12,000 tonnes, across offshore wind, interconnector, oil and gas and subsea projects.
For the Baltic, the relevance is in scheduling. The region has a dense pipeline of export cable and interconnector work over the next few years, and access to carousel capacity without a permanent asset purchase gives contractors one more way to match equipment to a campaign window.
