ENOVA Power GmbH has brought the repowered Windpark Meppen online after approximately two years of construction, marking the largest repowering project in the company’s history. The nine new Vestas V172 turbines deliver a combined installed capacity of around 65 MW — enough to supply roughly 46,500 three-person households with renewable electricity.

The new turbines are among the largest onshore wind installations currently being built in Germany. With a rotor diameter of 172 metres, hub height of 175 metres and total height of 261 metres, each unit operates significantly more efficiently than the 14 legacy turbines they replaced. The projected annual energy yield of approximately 163 million kWh represents around four times the output of the original 2002-era fleet.

“The successful completion of the repowering at Windpark Meppen marks a significant milestone for ENOVA,” said Björn Burau, Chief Financial Officer of ENOVA. “This project demonstrates how we can sustainably modernise existing sites through technical expertise, operational strength, and trusted collaboration with stakeholders.”

A central element of the project was the inclusion of local stakeholders. Landowners and operators of the original turbines were offered the opportunity to participate financially in the new wind farm — an offer widely taken up. Local residents can also invest via subordinated loans. Under §6 of Germany’s Renewable Energy Act (EEG), the City of Meppen receives a direct share of electricity revenues and business tax proceeds from the wind farm’s operations. Five per cent of annual land rents are earmarked for non-profit causes within the municipality.

ENOVA has been active at the Meppen site for more than 20 years, having developed the original fourteen turbines between 2000 and 2004. Federal immission control approval for the repowering was granted in July 2023. Construction of the new turbines began in November 2025, and the final removal of the remaining legacy units is expected by August 2026.

With 1 GW of onshore wind capacity under management, ENOVA ranks among Germany’s largest onshore wind operators. The company aims to expand its portfolio to 3 GW and grow assets under management to €5 billion by the end of 2030.
