German developer JUWI has signed contracts for the technical operation, service and maintenance of six further battery energy storage systems (BESS), the company said on 6 October. The projects are under construction and are due to enter operation within the next six months.

The systems are being built for three different energy companies, which JUWI did not name. Storage capacities range from 4 to 100 megawatt-hours. JUWI will provide technical management, service and maintenance for the first years of operation.

JUWI’s O&M unit has looked after battery storage in Germany and Belgium for more than five years. With the new contracts, the portfolio it services rises to around 700 megawatt-hours of storage capacity. Across wind and solar, JUWI’s operations business manages plants of more than 4,000 megawatts.

“Our aim is to operate the plants reliably, safely and economically over their entire life cycle,” said Oliver Otte, head of O&M at JUWI. The company is a subsidiary of Mannheim-based utility MVV Energie and has offices in Rostock on the Baltic coast, as well as in Hannover, Stuttgart and other German cities.

Battery storage is increasingly paired with wind and solar parks in Germany and around the Baltic Sea, where grid operators need flexible capacity to balance variable generation.
