Ostwind 3 is divided into three permit sections. The first section is located in the EEZ. The public participation period for this section runs until 28 June 2023. The authority conducting the procedure in this case is the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Public participation for the third section – the land route, transformer station and loop-in – is to take place this summer. As in the second section, the approval authority is the Ministry of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Ostwind 3 is the grid connection project of the Windanker wind farm. In the future, a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW) is to be dissipated from there. For the first time, in addition to the cable systems for connecting the wind farm to the transmission grid, the offshore transformer platform (USP) is also being planned, constructed and operated entirely by 50Hertz.

Ostwind 3 is the third offshore project for the grid connection of the wind farm areas to the north-east of Rügen island (see also Ostwind and Ostwind 2 ) In 2005, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) designated the area called ‘Westlich Adlergrund’ as a particularly suitable area for the construction of wind turbines. It has a surface of 109.2 square kilometres and is located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Baltic Sea, i.e. beyond the 12 nautical mile zone designated as coastal waters. It is located at about 42 kilometres from the closest coast of Rügen island, and some 100 kilometres from the transition point between the submarine and land cable in the Vierow port area near Lubmin.
