Today marks the annual celebration of Global Wind Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the transformative power of wind energy in reshaping our energy systems, decarbonizing economies, and fostering job growth. This year, WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) have launched the #WorkInWind campaign, putting a spotlight on the people driving the wind energy revolution.
With over 370,000 individuals employed in the wind sector across Europe, the diversity and unique professional journeys of these workers are a testament to the sector’s dynamic growth and potential. Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, emphasized the importance of these contributions, stating, “Our diversity is our strength. No journey to the wind sector is the same, and we want to celebrate the unique stories that make up our community.”
The #WorkInWind campaign encourages professionals in the wind sector to share their personal stories and experiences on LinkedIn. Participants are asked to post a photo of themselves at work, share their professional journey, and describe what wind energy means to them. They are also encouraged to tag three colleagues, inviting them to join the campaign and use the hashtags #GlobalWindDay and #WorkInWind.
Reflecting on her journey in wind energy, Małgosia Bartosik, the Deputy CEO of WindEurope, wrote “No journey to the wind sector is the same. Mine started 20 years ago, when I joined WindEurope for an internship, and I could have never imagined the opportunities this job keeps giving me every day. One of my favourite project is the children books, we wrote during the pandemic, with Philippa Nuttall.”
The campaign aims to fill LinkedIn feeds with inspirational stories and photos, showcasing the passion and dedication of those working in the wind industry. Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, highlighted the broader impact of wind energy, noting, “Wind energy is now one of the most competitive energy sources globally. The question now is not ‘why wind energy’ but rather ‘why not?’”
“What makes this journey really special are the amazing people – fantastic cooperation partners, nice competitors and great colleagues – who so many of you have become my friends” wrote Anu Eslas, Head of International Business Development at Ignitis Group, in her LinkedIn post.
Wind energy has become a cornerstone of the global energy transition. Onshore wind is now the cheapest form of new power generation in most of Europe, and offshore wind costs have fallen by over 60% in three years. This affordability, coupled with the local economic benefits and environmental advantages, underscores wind energy’s critical role in achieving a sustainable future.
Victor Santos, Global Supplier Quality Manager – Offshore Wind Towers at GE Vernova, noted: “Lots of learning and professional development since I began, 15 years ago in the Oil and Gas industry and in the past 5 years when the opportunity to join the Renewable industry arose, a segment which I became passionate […] Certainly, I do feel even more proud when I show my little kids pictures & videos of the job my team and I do, and I can see their eyes shining brighter than the stars.”
The campaign launch aligns with several other activities celebrating Global Wind Day, including educational events, success story features, and resources aimed at encouraging more people to consider careers in wind energy.
