The MLK Gruppe and the eegon Eifel energy cooperative opened the repowered Scheid wind farm in the Vulkaneifel district of Rhineland-Palatinate on 10 June 2026. Residents, project partners and local politicians gathered at the new turbines to mark the commissioning, with citizen participation at the centre of the project.
The repowering replaces four older turbines with four Nordex N163 machines of the 7 MW class. The first two are now connected to the grid, raising the site’s capacity from 4 to 14 MW. Once all four are running, the farm will reach 27.2 MW and an annual yield of around 64 million kWh — enough to supply about 20,000 households. Each turbine is rated at 6.8 MW, with a hub height of 164 metres and a rotor diameter of 163 metres.
A defining feature of the project is the cooperation between the developer and eegon: one of the new turbines is operated jointly with the cooperative from Wiesbaum, which has joined the project company as a co-operator. “The aim of the cooperation was to give the residents of Scheid the chance to take part directly in the project,” said eegon board member Monika Seifen, adding that the model keeps the financial value in the Eifel. Kevin Schröder, who heads MLK’s regional office in Hallschlag, said the company plans, builds and operates the turbines itself to remain part of the region.
Development at the site is set to continue. MLK holds permits for four additional 7 MW turbines — a one-for-one replacement of four 1 MW DeWind machines — and positive preliminary approvals for five more, with hub heights of up to 199 metres. The developer, active for more than 30 years, reports over 780 MW of installed wind capacity (380 MW self-operated) and a project pipeline of 1 GW, targeting 1 GW in its own portfolio by the end of the decade.
