• Ocean Winds, a global leader in the offshore wind industry, has signed a contract with P&Q, a Polish general contractor in the power sector, for the implementation of key onshore infrastructure at the BC-Wind project.
  • The contract covers the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the onshore substation, which aims to integrate with the national electricity system.

Warsaw, April 17, 2025: Ocean Winds, a global company specializing in offshore wind energy, formed as a 50-50 joint venture by EDP Renewables and ENGIE, has signed a contract with the Polish company P&Q for the comprehensive implementation of the onshore connection infrastructure of the BC-Wind project. The scope of the contract includes the design, construction, installation and commissioning of an onshore substation in the municipality of Choczewo, Pomorskie Voivodeship. This partnership significantly strengthens the participation of local players in the supply chain for Ocean Winds’ offshore wind farm project in Poland.

The BC-Wind onshore substation, will play an important role in the transmission of energy generated by the offshore wind farm to the national power system. P&Q is starting the design work phase, while construction work is scheduled to begin in 2026.

“The selection of P&Q as the contractor for the onshore power derivation system for the BC-Wind project is a continuation of our successful cooperation that began in 2021. P&Q has successfully developed the conceptual and design documentation for the construction projects of the onshore substation and onshore export lines, making it a natural partner for the further implementation of this project. As an international investor in Poland, we focus on the development of the local supply chain and actively influence the development of the Polish offshore wind market. We are delighted to have a partner who brings not only experience, but also commitment to the realization of such an important element of our investment, which is the transmission infrastructure” – Kacper Kostrzewa, Managing Director in Poland, Ocean Winds.

The onshore substation will be located in the Choczewo municipality about 30 km from the location of the BC-Wind offshore wind farm. The planned investment includes the construction of a 400kV and 275kV overhead switchgear, a power transformer, a control room building and a reactive power compensation facility. The power transformer will be responsible for increasing the voltage transmitted from the offshore substation – from 275kV to 400kV – enabling efficient transmission of energy to the switchgear of the national power system.

The substation will operate as an unmanned facility with the possibility of remote control, which will translate into high operational efficiency and safety levels. The investment site directly borders the 400kV Choczewo switching station owned by the Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (Polish power grid operator).

“Ocean Winds is one of the world’s leading offshore energy developers, and our journey together on the BC-Wind project began in 2021 with conceptual work, through design and analysis activities for the power derivation system. We look back with pride as this collaboration continues to grow. The achievement of the key milestone of the BC-Wind project, is the result of mutual determination and commitment. It’s also a testament to the high quality of our services and a confirmation that teamwork and belief in shared success are fundamental to achieving goals” – Piotr Sokolowski, Member of the Board of Directors of P&Q.

The project aims to achieve a planned capacity of 390 MW, with a total farm area of 90.94 km². This will make it possible to provide electricity for about 488,000 households per year. The project is currently in the final contracting phase, with the final investment decision (FID) scheduled for 2025. Electricity supply to the grid is scheduled to begin in 2028.
