RWE has fed electricity into the German grid for the first time from Nordseecluster A, the opening phase of its 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind development in the North Sea. The company confirmed the milestone in late July 2026, only weeks after the first turbine was installed.

Nordseecluster A comprises 44 Vestas turbines of 15 MW each, giving a combined capacity of 660 MW. The array sits around 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist, inside Germany’s exclusive economic zone. Power runs to two offshore substations and then through the grid operator’s converter station to the mainland. RWE expects the first phase to be fully commissioned in early 2027.

A second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add a further 900 MW. Foundation work is due to start in 2027, with turbine installation planned for 2028 and commercial operation from early 2029. Once the full 1.6 GW is running, RWE estimates the site will generate around 6.5 TWh of electricity a year.

Nordseecluster is one of the larger offshore projects under construction in German waters and feeds into the pipeline Berlin is relying on to meet its 2030 offshore wind targets.
