Over the next four years, Klaipėda Port Authority plans to invest in projects that will strengthen the port’s competitiveness, support cargo growth, and significantly contribute to sustainability. By 2029, a total of €775 million is planned to be invested in developments that are important not only for the port, but for Lithuania as a whole.

“Last year was a successful one for Klaipėda Port. This is reflected in our cargo handling results –  we reached the milestone of 39 million tonnes and exceeded forecasts. The year was also marked by major investment achievements, from deepening the port channel and completing the Fleet Base construction, to launching the development of a green hydrogen station and a new cruise ship terminal. Consistent investment in expansion, infrastructure improvements, and innovative solutions is a key driver behind these strong results. Over the next four years, we have no intention of slowing down. Ahead of us is the largest project in the port’s history – the development of the southern part of the port – which will ensure sustainable growth, along with further upgrades to existing infrastructure, new services, and green initiatives,” says Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

Based on current trends, Klaipėda Port’s cargo volumes are expected to grow by 2–3% annually. Growing volumes also mean new infrastructure needs. At the moment, Klaipėda Port has no available areas left for expansion, so new opportunities are being explored. The recently approved 2026–2029 strategic plan includes the development of the port’s southern part. This project – designed to create new port capacity and cargo potential – will receive the largest share of the investment programme, nearly €600 million. Including the contribution expected from future investors, the total value of the full development will exceed €1 billion. The first stage of the project – the construction of the southern port gates – is planned to begin in mid-2026, while all construction works are expected to be completed by 2028.

Other ongoing infrastructure projects will also continue. Funding remains secured for the construction of the new cruise ship terminal, which will meet the needs of growing cruise traffic, the city, and NATO allies. By the end of this year, Klaipėda Port also plans to complete the infrastructure needed for wind turbine assembly and storage at port. This project is important for strengthening the growth of the maritime engineering industry in Klaipėda and for ensuring favourable conditions in advance for offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea. The river port of Jurbarkas will also continue to be developed, supporting inland waterway transport and contributing to green goals.

Alongside new territory development, existing infrastructure will continue to be upgraded to ensure cargo handling companies can maintain high operating capacity. Around €40 million is planned for quay reconstruction and port channel deepening works. Over the coming years, the Port Authority will also invest in security solutions for Klaipėda Port.

Sustainability initiatives will remain among the Port Authority’s priorities over the next four years. Already this year, green hydrogen will be produced, international ferries will be able to switch off their engines while in port by using shore-supplied electricity, the Port Authority’s fleet will be significantly renewed, and environmental monitoring will be strengthened. A total of €21 million will be allocated to sustainability initiatives over four years.
