Developer Ørsted and Poland’s PGE are shipping more than 400 additional steel structures to the installation port at Rønne on Bornholm for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, as foundation work on the 1.5 GW project moves into an intensive phase. More than 75 per cent of these secondary steel units come from Polish factories.

The components — external platforms, suspended internal platforms, service-vessel mooring platforms and anode cages — are being supplied by three manufacturers. From Świnoujście, 107 suspended internal platforms produced by Smulders at its plant in Żary will be transported to the Baltic. From Gdańsk, 111 mooring platforms and 111 anode cages made by Grupa Przemysłowa Baltic will travel to Bornholm. The longest route belongs to 107 external working platforms built by Etermar in Setúbal, Portugal.

“Baltica 2 is in an intensive construction phase: we are installing further monopiles at sea while coordinating deliveries of the components needed to equip the foundations,” said Ulrik Lange, VP and Managing Director of Baltica 2 at Ørsted, noting that more than 75 per cent of the additional steel comes from Polish plants. Bartosz Fedurek, President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica, said the involvement of Polish firms reflected “the maturity of the domestic industry and its readiness to take part in demanding offshore wind projects.”

The secondary steel equips the foundations: internal and external platforms give technical crews access to the structures, mooring platforms allow service vessels to dock safely, and anode cages form part of the corrosion-protection system. Transport to the installation port will continue until the end of August, with the first structures fitted to monopiles in early June.

Baltica 2, located around 40 km off the coast near Ustka, is a joint venture between Ørsted and PGE. First power is expected in the first half of 2027, with full commercial operation planned by the end of that year. Once complete, the farm will be able to supply around 2.5 million Polish households.
