PGE Group and Ørsted have contracted vessels to transport and install foundations for the Baltica 2 project, one of two phases of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm.
Van Oord, the successful bidder, will transport and install 111 monopiles on the offshore farm construction area. This is the type of foundation that will be used in the construction of Baltica 2. The vast majority, 107 monopiles, will serve as foundations for wind turbines, while the remaining 4 will be used as foundations for offshore electrical substations.
– We are consistently concluding more contracts with offshore companies for the installation of all components for the Baltica 2 farm. We have already chartered ships to install turbines and cables, and now we have also chartered a fleet to install foundations, from which the construction of the power plant at sea begins. Work on installing the foundations is scheduled to begin in 2026, and the first electricity from Baltica 2 will flow to customers a year later – said Arkadiusz Sekściński, President of the Board of PGE Baltica, which implements the PGE Group’s Offshore Program.
– Ørsted has 30 years of experience in preparing for the construction of offshore wind farms, contracting contractors for them, as well as building and operating the farms. Together with PGE, we have made a commitment to provide large-scale offshore wind power for Poland. In 2023, we finalized contracts for the supply of all components for the offshore part of the Baltica 2 project, and we already have the last contracts ahead of us, which bring us closer to the realization of this strategic project for offshore wind energy in Poland – as stated by Agata Staniewska-Bolesta, Managing Director of Ørsted Offshore Poland.
Van Oord is a leading international contractor with more than 150 years of experience in marine engineering and offshore projects. Van Oord will use two installation vessels, the Aeolus and the Svanen, to carry out the transportation and installation of foundations for the Baltica 2 project.
Baltica 2 is one of two – along with Baltica 3 – phases of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm. Ørsted and PGE plan to complete construction of the Baltica 2 stage with a capacity of approx. 1.5 GW by the end of 2027, while the Baltica 3 stage with a capacity of approx. 1 GW by 2030. Investors are yet to make a final investment decision (FID). Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will form the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, which will significantly contribute to the transformation of Poland’s energy sector by providing green energy to nearly 4 million households in Poland.
