Secure access to fuel and energy is essential to NATO’s deterrence and defence, the Alliance’s Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska told the annual FuelsEurope Conference in Brussels on 10 June 2026.

Shekerinska said defence depends on uninterrupted supplies of fuel and energy, and that supply chains must remain secure, resilient and able to support military operations in a crisis. She called for reducing strategic vulnerabilities and strengthening the protection of critical energy infrastructure.

Close cooperation between the defence and energy sectors, she added, remains essential to Allied security and resilience.

The message carries particular weight in the Baltic Sea region, where the security of subsea cables, pipelines and a growing fleet of offshore wind farms has moved to the centre of national defence planning following a series of incidents involving critical seabed infrastructure.
