The Dutch company Van Oord has set up operations at the habour, preparing for the shipment of massive foundations for a new wind turbine project in the Baltic Sea. This exciting project will run well into 2025 and requires local workforce support and contributions from local suppliers.

One of the first tasks is establishing sandbanks to support these impressive foundations.

The port previously managed foundations for Arcadis Ost 1.

“The current foundations are enormous steel structures, resembling over-sized straws. At nearly 100 meters in length and 10 meters in diameter, these structures are driven into the seabed to stabilize the tower, turbine, and blades that will be mounted on top,” says Jeppe la Cour, Commercial Director at Port of Roenne A/S.

Once at Roenne, these elements are securely stored, minimizing the risk of delays when it’s time for transport. When they’re ready for deployment, each foundation is capped at both ends and transported to its final position on the water, where a specialized vessel manages the installation.

Local businesses are set to benefit from this project, both through the creation of sandbanks and logistics support. Each foundation weighs up to 2,000 tons, requiring robust storage solutions at the harbor.

“Local companies have the chance to contribute, as we’ll need resources like sand and stone sourced locally. Past projects have shown that involving local vendors is both viable and beneficial for all parties,” adds la Cour, who also serves on the board of Offshore Center Bornholm – a network for offshore-linked businesses in the region.
